The generalist parasitoid Nasonia vitripennis shows more behavioural plasticity in host preference than its three specialist sister species

چکیده

Host preference is an important behaviour in parasitoid females as they must choose suitable hosts for their offspring. Preference includes location, recognition and acceptance of hosts. Both genetic environmental factors can affect all those stages. Here, we focus on two (rearing history experience) affecting host the wasp genus Nasonia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae: Pteromalinae), which harbours both a generalist (N. vitripennis) several closely related specialists giraulti, N. longicornis oneida). We tested whether prefer that developed by rearing them different species (Lucilia sericata Calliphora vomitoria) over 10 generations before testing preference. then experience changes allowing to feed oviposit either Only vitripennis showed behavioural plasticity effect was overruled with species. In contrast, three specialist were not affected long-term only shifted based experience. four known species, individual adult modulated recognition,

Species and sexual differences in behavioural responses of a specialist and generalist parasitoid species to host-related volatiles.

The relationship between the degree of specialization of parasitoids and their responses to host-related volatiles is an important and current evolutionary question. Specialist parasitoids which have evolved to attack fewer host species are predicted to be more responsive to host-related volatiles than generalists. We tested the above prediction by comparing behavioural responses of both sexes ...

Host-Specific Phenotypic Plasticity of the Turtle Barnacle Chelonibia testudinaria: A Widespread Generalist Rather than a Specialist

Turtle barnacles are common epibionts on marine organisms. Chelonibia testudinaria is specific on marine turtles whereas C. patula is a host generalist, but rarely found on turtles. It has been questioned why C. patula, being abundant on a variety of live substrata, is almost absent from turtles. We evaluated the genetic (mitochondrial COI, 16S and 12S rRNA, and amplified fragment length polymo...

population variation of a specialist versus a generalist aphid sharing the same host plant in field

aphids in unsprayed canola (brassica napus linnaeus) fields in isfahan province (central iran) were sampled for two growing seasons, 2011-2013. sampling unit was a whole plant and 20 plants were sampled weekly. in the laboratory, heat-extracting and sub-sampling techniques were used to estimate the density of aphids. to determine the relationship between population growth rate of the aphids and...

Host switching in a generalist parasitoid: contrasting transient and transgenerational costs associated with novel and original host species

Parasitoids face challenges by switching between host species that influence survival and fitness, determine their role in structuring communities, influence species invasions, and affect their importance as biocontrol agents. In the generalist parasitoid, Venturia canescens (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), we investigated the costs in encapsulation, survival, and body size on juveni...

Incomplete behavioural isolation and asymmetric female preference in darter sister species (Percidae: Etheostoma).

In this study, female preferences and behavioural isolation were estimated in a pair of allopatric sister species, Etheostoma duryi and Etheostoma flavum. Dichotomous mate preference trials were conducted to determine whether females prefer to associate with conspecific over heterospecific males and free-spawning assays were conducted to determine whether those preferences translated into behav...
